Once again
it seems I have to
travel to see any sort of half decent band and this time it’s down to
Fibbers in York to see the mighty Tokyo Dragons.
With this
being only a small venue it soon seems reasonably full and this paves well
for any band that plays here.
You don’t really have to have a large crowd
to create an atmosphere in this intimate venue.
First up
tonight are Phluid, a band that I haven’t seen or heard before tonight, but
on the strength of tonight’s performance, are a band that I would highly recommend to
anyone who likes good old fashioned ballsy rock n' roll.
With a sound
that is a mix between Terrorvision and the Backyard Babies they deliver
100% hard nose rock like it used to be. Stand out tracks played tonight
would have to be 'Digital TV', 'Bang Bang', 'Oh Ziggy', and the raucous
'Breakdown in
Communication'.
Now on to the
main event and the reason for the 150 mile round trip to York, the Tokyo
Dragons. I’ve now seen the Tokyo Dragons three times now, once as a support act
and twice as headliners, and on all three occasions the band has totally
rocked, tonight being no exception.
With most of
the set concentrating on the bands debut album 'Give Me The Fear', they
opened up with ‘What The Hell’ and then stormed into ‘Get Em Off’ before
pausing for breath and hailing their return to Fibbers.
The set
continued with the rousing ‘Johnny Don’t Wanna Ride’ and ‘Come On Baby’
and the bands first ever-single ‘Teenage Screamers’.
As the band
continued relentlessly through the set.
They just took the crowd along for
the ride and each member of the audience just totally rocked out with the band. The bands
music seems to have bridged the age gap between the older rock crowd and
the younger crowd as tonight’s crowd plainly showed.
Among them were
t-shirts from bands like Iron Maiden and Metallica,
aside the likes of Marilyn
Manson and Franz Ferdinand. |

The set
continued with ‘Burn On’ and ‘Let It Go’ before they played the only new
song not on the 'Give Me The Fear' album,
a song entitled ‘Do It Any Way’, which went down a storm.
The band then finished off a great set with ‘Do You Wanna’
and then 'Rockin The Stew’ before leaving the stage to a rapturous applause.
The encore
started with a bass solo from Mathias who was watched by fellow
band mates Steve, Mal & Phil from behind the
barriers at the front of stage,
who spent the majority of it pointing and mocking him from the audience
before joining him once more on stage to round off another great Dragons show.

The only
complaint I have about the gig was the price the band were charging for
their album.
£12.99 is a bit steep for CD’s at venues.
As I haven’t yet got
a copy of the album I was going to purchase it at tonight’s gig, but as I
can get it cheaper on the net I left it at that. But the price of the CD’s
aside if you haven’t seen the band before and you need an injection of
good old rock n' roll then check them out next time they're at a venue near
you. |
