For the third time this year
Danny Vaughn was visiting Newcastle, this time with his own band at the
small but friendly venue of The Cluny, and judging by the amount of people
hanging around early on for his 'meet and greet' it was going to be busy.
Once in the hall it wasn't long before the first of the two support bands,
the local Divide Issue hit the stage, bursting into their four power metal
song set. Unfortunately the sound wasn't quite right and it was all
a bit muffled but once it was sorted out the band put on a decent show of
newly tried songs that seemed to set the crowd up for the rest of the
night.
Next up were Crimes of Passion and all I can say
is to Dale "Do I love myself or what" the singer is, you were at The Cluny
not the Arena! There weren't thousands of fans watching and
screaming for you, sorry. He was a cross between Bruce Dickinson and
David Lee Roth with a touch of Spinal Tap thrown in, but again the sound
was all wrong and his vocals were drowned out. But once it settled
he proved that he had a decent voice that mixed well with the melodic rock
the band played that had the crowd nodding their heads in unison, but it
was due to the antics and patter of Dale that made it hard to take him
seriously though the band as a whole did enough to win quite a few people
over eventually. It will be interesting to see them again!
After a short break Danny Vaughn and the band
arrived on stage to a heroes welcome and after the 'Hello's' they began
their show with the now familiar 'Miracle Days', but as before the sound
just wasn't right so again the vocals were quiet and it wasn't until the
following 'Restless Blood' that things picked up.
Not all of tonight's songs were taken from his
latest album 'Traveller', quite a few were from Vaughn's back catalogue
such as 'Fearless' and 'Soldiers And Sailors', much to the delight of his
most ardent fans amongst the crowd.
In between songs he got to thank the audience for
turning up and making him feel at home but also the organisers of
tonight's gig for their hard work, yet
the
most poignant was how much local rock D.J. Little Jeff was missed that
got a rapturous return from the crowd in front of him.
After an acoustical interlude of 'Sweeter Than Life' and 'Better By Far'
it was back to the rockier side with 'Shadowlands' and a bit of audience
participation led by Vaughn who then in turn thanked his band Tony
Marshall, Pat Heath, Steve McKenna and Lee Morris for their work and
support on the new c.d. and the tour, then with 'The Warriors Way' and the
very well received 'Traveller', the set was over.
Obviously the band
returned for an encore and set about doing a storming version of Thin
Lizzy's 'Cold Sweat', each member head banging like there was no tomorrow
before finally ending the show with 'Forever Young' that had the crowd in
heaven, singing along with Danny that was a fitting end to a really good
and down to earth night enjoyed both by the band and the audience.
Hopefully it won't be long before Danny Vaughn visits Newcastle again,
possibly on the Tyketto reunion tour planned for October this year?!?
