First up tonight are Dante Fox who I recently caught at this years
Firefest pre show party at Branford's Pennington's and was very impressed
with them and with the vocals of Sue Willets who has a very unique vocal
style a sort of UK Alana Miles.
With three bands playing tonight Dante Fox
were still doing a sound check when the doors were opened and were on
stage just a few moments later and the majority of the crowd hadn’t
arrived yet. But this never put them off as the proceeded with their
somewhat short set of about 30 mins that included ‘I Cant See’, ‘Move
Closer’ and ‘City Lights’ all of which seemed lost to the majority of the
crowd but some of us did appreciate the high quality of musicianship on
show tonight. Only when they did their final song, the excellent cover of
Remember did the few people who were in soon come to life, it’s a shame
because Dante Fox are a very talented band.
Next up were the "never say die"
Girlschool who have risen to the dizzy heights of the industry and have
also see its lows.
But like all good band they never die the just let the
trends pass by and come back bigger and stronger.
Opening up with ‘Lets
Go’ and ‘Not For Sale’ the band sound tighter than ever and seem to be
enjoying playing live.
The set included many tracks from their huge back
catalogue including many of my favourite tracks like ‘Hit And Run’, ‘Never
Say Never’ and ‘Screaming Blue Murder’ (which happens to be the last tour
I saw them live). They went way back for some of the set as they played
tracks off their debut album Demolition Boys, these being ‘Yeah Right’,
‘Emergency’ and the title track ‘Demolition Boys’, which were as good now
as they were back then. With the encore including ‘Take It All Away’ and
‘I'm Not That Innocent’, the girls were definitely back in town and were
still the force that I remembered them as.
Now for Vixen, although the
majority of the band are new to us and only Jan Kuehnemund remaining from
the original line up that split back in 1991 after only two albums. But
the impact the band made then still manages to bring a crowd to Bradford
to see them in their present form.
Opening up the set with ‘Rev It Up’,
the band were certainly firing
on all cylinders. This was quickly followed by ‘Streets In Paradise’.
Both songs whipping the crowd into frenzy. The new track ‘Live And Learn’
was next and was impressive and shows that depth of the band not live on
past glories and to put together a new album. But it was the hits the
crowd had come to here and they got them with ‘Not A Minute Too Soon’,
‘Love Is A Killer’, ‘Cryin'’ and ‘Edge Of A Broken Heart’ and these were
mixed well with tracks off the impending new album.
To finish the night the encore was headed by ‘Bad Reputation’ and a
storming version of Bowies ‘Suffragette City’, which ended a barnstormer
of a gig.
