Artist:  Pretty Boy Floyd

Venue: Trillians Rock Bar, Newcastle

Date: 7 February 2002

Tonight was a total sell-out, which is a rare thing for bands playing this particular venue. It may be the most famous rock bar in the North East of England but how many times have we seen this many people crammed into this venue? The hoards swarmed in as soon as the doors opened and soon the management and bouncers began to look nervous.

We had come out in full force and whoever said glam rock was dead and buried should have been here tonight. It's not even had a snooze as far as we're concerned. We were here to party and eagerly awaited our heroes with pints in one hand and camera's in the other.

Sadly the opening band Neon Bomb were all attitude and no substance and failed miserably to even turn our heads. They screeched, they jumped around the stage the lead singer even leapt off and tried to run around the crowd to get their attention. We weren't having any of it.

This is one band that were so terminally dire that someone should really tell them to drop the attitude and concentrate more on their actual material. The only cheer they got was at the end when they left. We have local bands playing the social club on a Friday night with more talent than these guys.

For anyone to follow a band straight after a 'performance' like that was going to be a tough one.

Luckily though it came in the shape of Pretty Boy Floyd, a band whose Porn Stars CD gets so much play in the local clubs it's almost into our leathers. Having spoken to a few people earlier on while the support act were playing it soon became apparent that a good percentage of the crowd here tonight had actually come along to see Pretty Boy Floyd as opposed to Faster Pussycat.

This wasn't meant as a personal slur on Faster Pussycat though; it's just that with so many tracks off Porn Stars being played in the clubs, a lot of people were looking forward to experiencing them live.

Rather sadly the only original member of the band left is lead singer Steve Summers. However the new faces came in the shape of Keri Kelli on lead guitar, Lesli Sanders on Bass, and not forgetting the rather tasty Dish on drums.

Within seconds, yes literally within seconds every head was turned to the front of the stage and eyes and ears were locked on the band. Opening with 'Your momma won't Know', the band soon had us eating out of the palm of their hands.

Cranking up the mood a bit more they continued with a long time favourite 'Leather Boyz'. By this time we were up and we were partying our little socks off. We didn't need to be asked twice when it comes to a good time we're up there with the best of them. The band might have looked a little worried when they first came on but once they had ripped into this gem they realised we were with them 200%.

How long have we been crying out for decent rock music? I can't remember the times people have said … 'oh I remember the good old days when bands played songs that used to be fun and used to get us going'. Well here tonight we had a band that did just that. They played well; they looked genuinely humble at the huge response the fans gave them.

They pouted and posed alright, but they had an endearing edge to them that made us love for all they were worth. Just goes to show when you have proper talent and solid songs you don't need to have a mean gun-slinging attitude. You can shoot from the hip, but we don't need you to shoot from the lip as well. Neon Bomb take note!

While Steve strutted across the stage and gave us all his sex god gaze, Keri and Lesli played mean and dirty with their guitars. Who could fail to notice the brightly coloured mane Lesli was sporting? To say it was magnificent is an understatement.

Perched at the back and pounding seven shades out of the drums was a very hot looking Dish. He may have felt warm but he looked like he was having the time of his life back there.

The band also had a guest guitarist joining them on tour. I think he hailed from Leeds, but don't quote me on that. Sorry but I can't remember your name, but I do remember you were one hell of a guitarist and I wondered why we hadn't seen you on tour with other bands before.

The room was hot, the fans pressed up against the front of the stage, totally bewitched by the band and their tunes.

The band played 'Shut Up' from the new EP called 'A tale of Sex'. It sounded really good and the fans soon joined in with the catchy chorus.

Steve and Keri played a wonderful version of 'Wild Angels' which would normally have seen a hundred lighters flicked into action if the room hadn't been so packed with so many backcombed heads stuck solid with hairspray. Wella should have sponsored this tour, as there must have been a sudden surge in their Shockwaves hairspray this week. Gosh what a flammable lot we must have been that night!

Other gems throughout the set that set the room alight (metaphorically speaking of course!) were 'Rock n' roll Outlaws' and 'Good girl gone Bad'.

The set flew over and sadly came to an end all too soon. I know there were a great many people who would have loved to have stood listening to this band all night. Perhaps next time they tour they might risk coming over as the headliner and giving us more of this good stuff.

Fabulous set, brilliant performance, hurry back lads we love ya big time!
