Artist:  Gorgoroth & Averse Sefira

Venue: Button Factory, Dublin

Date: 21 November 2008

There was a very strange atmosphere in the venue the night of Gorgoroth. There was a great crowd there, but there seemed to be an underlying silence. I don’t know if people were trying to be cool, or if people were being sombre because it was a black metal gig!!. My knowledge of Gorgoroth could be written on the back of a stamp (all I know is that they are from Norway!!), but I am up to listening to anything. We only managed to catch the second support group, who were a band called Averse Sefira from Texas. They were very well received and I have to say that although they were quite extreme, I did enjoy them. Whilst we were watching them, we noticed Gaal wandering around the audience. Although he isn’t very tall, he has a certain scary aura about him. However, I did see a few people ask him for a photo and he seemed very more than happy to oblige.

Now on to the gig (I have to try and remember that I am not writing for OK! Magazine!!). From the moment Gorgoroth hit the stage (along with their corpse paint), the crowd went mad. The sound was very clear and although it can be difficult to decipher black mental lyrics, the music and the vocals were very extreme but very listenable. Although I couldn’t tell you what songs they sang (apologies to any real fans out there), they seemed to play a popular set. My only criticism is that the band only seemed to play for an hour, during which they did not address the audience at all. As soon as they finished, the walked straight off the stage.  We didn’t actually realise the gig was over until the house lights went on!!

This band is well worth going to see, even if only to have a black metal experience. If this is your scene, I would also recommend a book called ‘The Lords of Chaos’ which documents the rise of Black Metal in Norway……..mad stuff!!!!
