Artist: Heaven's Basement & Dear Superstar

Venue:  02 Academy, Newcastle

Date:  11 December 2009

In a year when the world was in deep recession and the bankers seemed hell bent on bringing the world as we know it to an end, there was still one thing you can bank on and that is feel good rock n' roll.   And two bands set on taking it the masses with relentless touring are Dear Superstar and Heavens Basement, and when both these bands united to tour together, not only in 2009 but well into 2010, the pair were set on burning up the UK stages like never before.

Tonight we caught these two bands live in action, waving the flag for good old fashioned no nonsense rock n' roll at Newcastle’s O2 Academy, and even though tonight's show was in the smaller of the two rooms, the enthusiastic sell-out crowd made it seem like it was in the large room, as both bands fuel injected rock just oozed out of every band members pores.

I know there we three bands on tonight but our apologies go to the first band, who we just caught the last song of their set because of traffic problems getting to the venue. From the feedback we heard amongst the crowd they went down well with those lucky enough, and early enough into the venue to catch them.

When Dear Superstar hit the stage the band were on fire from the off, with frontman Micky taking up the role of puppet master, as he worked the crowd up into a veritable frenzy as the band fired through their set, which mainly contained songs from their excellent debut album ‘Heartless'.  Although it was the newer songs that really showed us the band are looking towards the future with the superb 'Her Greed My Vanity’ and ‘Glitter Like Gold’.  The band even threw in a rousing cover version with the Kinks classic 'Lola’.

The band rounded things off in great style with their tour de force track for me, the excellent ‘Brothers In Blood’, once again showing the rest of the rock community how to ROCK it big style.

If you haven’t seen this band live then you’ve got to check them out because it's high octane all the way from start to finish.

Next up were Heavens Basement, who like Dear Superstar have tread the boards and spilled blood for their art over the stages both large and small throughout this green and pleasant land of ours.  And tonight was no different as just like Dear Superstar before them, they were on fire from the off.  These guys aren’t the all out rock affair that Dear Superstar are, they do bring it down a touch from time to time and this makes for a set that had something for all.

The crowd where well up for them tonight with the likes of ‘Misunderstood’ and ‘Reign On My Parade’ bringing the crowd to almost fever pitch, but it wasn't until Johnny Rocker took the mike for a thumping version of ‘Paranoid’, that the fans, both young and old, really went into overdrive.

They capped off the set with what else but ‘Executioners Day’, which again sent waves around the room and 250 voices made their selves heard as they sang along to this one.

As I can say about Dear Superstar is that they are a band that is must see live to get the full-on affect, but put these two bands together on the same stage and you should beg, steal or borrow the money to catch these two great British bands in action.  They're both destined for great things so see them now before the arena tours come calling.
