Artist: Drugdealer Cheerleader & The Pleasures

Venue:  The Gasworks, Bradford

Date:  27 November 2009

The rock n' roll crazy train that is The Mayfair Mall was on the road once again, this time it was back to one of favourite venues, The Gasworks in Bradford, for what turned out to be one of the highlights of the year.

When we first came across the German Glamsters The Pleasures we were blown away by their sheer energy, glamour and funtastic nature.  Every show we’ve seen them perform ever since then has been simply superb, so to say we were looking forward with eager anticipation to tonight's show was no word of a lie.

The Germans as a nation have a reputation of stiffness and order second to none, but The Pleasures throw all that out of the window as they have more Glitz than Strictly and more Jungle Fever that I’m A Celebrity ... and tonight they'd brought both in spades.

The band brought a little summer sunshine to the night as these glitter and spandex rockers really put on one hell of a rock show, with great blood pumping tracks like ‘Freedom’, ‘Pumpgun Baby’ and a stomping version of ‘Hip To Be Square’, and that was just for openers.

The band even threw in a traditional slice of German Christmas with Tannebaum before bringing back the rock with ‘Juicy Jacuzzi’, with Lord and Neo Patra just firing on all six on the guitars, while Sensai powered thru with some awesome bass lines.

They really put their own spin on the T-Rex classic ‘Children Of The Revolution’ bring this classic right up to date Pleasures style.

The likes of ‘Some Like It Rock’, ‘Shake Life’ and ‘Yes Means Yes and No Means Harder’ rocked big style as always and rounded off another great set, leaving me wondering just how on earth Drugdealer Cheerleader could follow that.

Well they did just that and put on one of the best sets I’ve seen from the band, the Pleasures seemed to set the bar pretty high but these guys were more than ready to jump it and set it even higher.

Opening up with ‘Fireworks’ it was clear the band were on fire, with frontman Hilda looking like a man possessed on stage, while with a definite fire in his belly Jay on guitar threw out the riffs, alongside the foundation of the band, Bomber on bass and Ringo on drums, pounding out the backbeat like their very life’s depended on it.

The band carried on with ‘Social’ and another oldie ‘Out Of Sight’ before bringing in ‘Britain’s Great’ and the ‘Brother’.  With such a great start to the set I was beginning to wonder if this was the same band I saw at this years Trashstock, they seemed to be somewhat on a leash that day but tonight they were like wild untamed beasts let loose and rocking all the way.

They continued their impressive set with ‘Happening Now’ and 'Bunch’ before one of the highlights of the night ‘LMFOA’, a real old school rocker with some great hooks.

But the real highlight of the set had to be ‘Blood’, which is a real barnstormer of a track.  The band rounded off a great night with ‘Gimme Some Love’ with an encore of ‘Maximum Power’, making this one of the best sets from the Londoners, and one that makes me wonder why they aren’t bigger than they are.  All in all tonight really was not only one of the highlights of the month, but of the whole year!
