Artist: Nashville Pussy

Venue:  02 Academy, Newcastle

Date:  18 April 2009

When it come to great hard rocking bands they don’t come anymore harder or faster than Kentucky rockers Nashville Pussy and the bands totally un-PC approach to rock n' roll takes no prisoners.

The band are the support act for fellow American rockers The Supersuckers, but tonight I witnessed a support band that totally blew the main act off the stage, as Blane Cartwright, Ruyter Suys, Karen Cuda and Jeremy Thompson rocked it up big style.

The intro from Dusk to Dawn’s infamous "We Got Pussy" scene and Tom Jones's 'What’s New Pussycat?' led the way for Kentucky’s finest to hit the stage.  The band hit the ground running with ‘Speed Machine’ and never left the road for nearly an hour with their blistering set.

The band have a real asset in Ruyter Suys, who has to be one of the finest female guitar players around and with a style hard and as fast as Zakk Wilde and as technical as Ted Nugent, she can also kick the mic height which I doubt either Wilde and Uncle Ted can do.

The bands big licks and high kicks rock continued with ‘Piece of Ass’, again with Suys just grinding out the riffs as Cuda and Thompson exploded with a massive bass and drum burst of energy, all this against Cartwright’s gruff Lemmy like vocal.

The band then pushed out the boogie riffs with ‘High As Hell’ before Suys powered out the intro for ‘Good Night For A Heart Attack’.

Just as you thought the band couldn’t pick it up much more they did just that with ‘C’mon’ and the fantastic ‘I’m So High’, taken from the band most recent album 'From Hell to Texas’, before jugganauting straight into ‘Ain't Your Business’.

By this time the venue was at full capacity and all around we just stunned at the sheer energy that the band have live and with Suy’s almost falling out of her top throughout the set, the first three rows down the front were getting a lot more action for their money than they'd originally expected.

The thumping high octane rock just kept on coming with classic Pussy like ‘One Way Down' and ‘Hate And Whiskey’, before the band turned the dial to 11 and ripped it up with their own version of Ike and Tina Turners ‘Nutbush City Limits’, a cover that went down a storm with the crowd.

These hard rocking yanks were really going for it tonight as they powered on through their set at breakneck speed and rocked it up like only Nashville Pussy can.  The set continued to impress the capacity crowd with ‘Struttin' Cock’, before returning to the new album for ‘Late Great USA’ and ‘Drunk Drivin' Man’.

As I said before the band were pulling no punches as they rounded off their set with

‘Go Motherfucker Go’.  Tonight we were having no half-hearted encore’s here as the band stayed on stage and gave us another stomping cover this time Slades ‘Why Why’, was given a Nashville Pussy makeover before they finished off a great night of rebellious and rampaging rock with ‘Goin' Down’, which saw Ruys just explode, ripping the strings from her guitar like some wild woman possessed as the song came to a close.

This is one band I would insist you check out live.  They really give their all and it's clear to see they truly love what they do, which is reflected in their live show.  I for one wouldn’t hesitate to go and see them perform live again next time round.
