Artist: The Rotted, Malefice, Anterior & The Condemned

Venue:  Fibbers Magee, Dublin

Date:  3 April 2009

For this Metal Blade gig, there was a line up of 3 bands: Anterior, Malefice and The Rotted.  However, prior to these Bands, a young Irish band called The Condemned took to the stage for a short set.  Although I had never heard of them before, The Condemned have been on the scene for a while with a number of releases under their belt.  As the venue was far from full, it couldn’t have been easy getting up on stage, however the Condemned didn’t let this put them off and they played as if they were in a sold out show.  They had great interaction with the crowd and seemed to be enjoying themselves.  Their sound is pure Death Metal, sounding on the lines of early Cannibal Corpse or Deicide.  I am not sure how much exposure this band has got to date, but they certainly are worth a look!!  www.condemned-uk.com .

Anterior took to the stage next and in my opinion were the highlight of the night.  They absolutely blew the place away.  They have a great melodic sound along with great vocals that weren’t too extreme.  Although Anterior seem to be classed as Death Metal, I don’t think that label does them any justice as I think they have a much wider appeal.  The vocals are not as distorted as some full on Death metal bands.  They played a great set and I would definitely check them out again and look forward to their next release.

Malefice are a very well organised and very professional group who looked very solid on stage.  Their music definitely crosses over a few genres of Metal even with the gruff (in a good way!!) vocals of Dale Butler.  As one

of the other lads also contributes to the singing, giving them a vocal edge.  This was Malefice’s first time in Ireland, but judging by the support they received, I don’t think it will be their last.  They were thoroughly enjoyable.

By the time The Rotted hit the stage, the atmosphere was good (due to the many pints that had been sank). The Rotted commanded the stage, and Ben McCrowe spend most of the first song in the audience. I had recently purchased ‘Get Dead Or Die Trying’ so I was at least familiar with their sound.  From a ‘live’ perspective, this band is absolutely mad!!  They are much more hardcore / deathcore than expected and as a result they have a very mixed fan base.  McCrowe never stopped jumping which gave the band a great and positive energy.  If you want to spend the night moshing and po-going, then the Rotted are the band for you!!
