Artist: As You Drown

Venue: Whelans, Dublin

Date: 4 March 2010

What a mix of bands on the bill tonight!! The gig started with Divine Chaos (UK), As You Drown (Sweden), Warpath (Ireland) and lastly Vader (Poland).  Unfortunately I missed Divine Chaos, but I was ready and waiting for As You Drown.  Hailing from Sweden, this band have chosen Death Metal as their genre and they have a lot to live up with likes of Entombed and Unleashed laying down the gauntlet in the 90’s.

This band are quite young in age and they formed back in 2003 (with a few personnel changes over the last number of years).  Technically this band are good, they have managed to create an old school death metal sound that brings me back to my Obituary and Morbid Angel days, however in order to survive the music industry, this band need to carve out their own sound.  That is not to say they need to recreate the wheel, but they need to find some element to their music that distinguishes them from the rest of the pack.  As You Drown is a great name for a band, but only if you can read it.  Come on lads, it is 2010, isn’t it time we moved away from the scrawly writing!!!

The band played a short enough set, but they we very tight and the crowd enjoyed it. Included in their set was:

  • Horns
  • Driven by Hatred
  • Open Wound Salvation

All from their 2009 release Reflection.
