| There’s
a lot to be said for being unique. But then again, there’s a lot to be
said for just rocking out on stage and making the fans bang their heads
until whiplash sets in and it’s the latter that Enforcer are far more
concerned with. Yes, there are those that will bemoan the band’s lack
of originality and will inevitably draw the comparisons with Angelwitch
and Judas Priest circa 1982 but for thirty great minutes tonight, their
voices are silenced by the sound of Enforcer ripping it up on stage with
some classic heavy metal.
Enforcer aren’t here to show off to musos with stupidly complicated ‘songs’ that have more in common with jazz exams in a music college than the ethos of four guys thrashing it out in a garage somewhere, but rather for the beer-drinkers and hell-raisers to bang their heads and pump their fists and for the half an hour they do just that and it may as well be 1982 again for all those in the front few rows care. Songs from second album Diamonds follow on from where Into the Night left off in 2008 albeit tighter, more focused and of course more polished (given the improved production) and this comes through in their live show. Olof’s singing isn’t quite as clear or generally at the level as it is on record but this may be down to the sound provided to the band by the venue, especially when you consider the stark contrast between their sound and that of the headliners which is pretty much picture perfect. Strangely enough, their biggest two songs so far, ‘Black Angel’ and ‘Mistress of Hell’ are left out tonight but Enforcer have hopefully successfully reached a new audience tonight and persuaded some of the more ‘metal’ people to their side. Nu-metal? New wave of this, that or the other metal? Na, some of us haven’t finished with the old one yet, least of all Enforcer. Setlist: 1. Midnight Vice, 2. Roll The Dice, 3. On The Loose, 4. Diamonds, 5. Scream of the Savage, 6. Walk With Me Review by: Adam Grindrod |
