Artist:   Gama Bomb

Venue: The Corporation, Sheffield

Date: 15 July 2010

As we head in to the Corporation tonight, it’s pretty noticeable how thin the crowd is. Having seen Sepultura several times over the past few years, this fact is disappointing but is unfortunately not surprising. With Andreas Kisser remaining as the only original member and the fact that nobody named Cavalera is currently involved with the band, not to mention the recent reunion of Max and Igor in Cavalera Conspiracy, one has to wonder how long the band can continue fighting what can only be described as an uphill battle.

A band that has their best years ahead of them rather than in the past is Irish thrashers Gama Bomb who provide the main support on this tour and take the stage to a very partisan, albeit diminished front few rows. Their performance does seem to win them quite a few new fans who are watching in the wings though as it’s pretty hard to not have a big grin on your face when the band in front of you are playing some good old fashioned thrash themed around zombies and old sci-fi movies!

Songs from the new album Tales from the Grave in Space pick up where Citizen Brain left off and continue the celebration of old-school thrash – tracks like ‘Slam Anthem’ and ‘We Respect You’ are self-explanatory and ‘Last Ninjas Unite’ is just plain silly for the hell of it and gloriously so. Although it is the shortest song of the set, ‘OCP’ (the band’s ode to Robocop) remains the best sing-a-long of the night but that’s not to overlook future classics like ‘Bullet Belt’ and ‘Evil Voices’, each with their own anthemic choruses for you to chant along to after a few too many pints of Guinness.

For a band such as this however, they perhaps could have exuded a little bit more energy on stage, at times looking a tad tired and singer Philly Byrne’s surprisingly low voice does take a bit of getting used to (it’s not your usual high-pitched thrash squeal) but these are very minor gripes in what was otherwise a fantastic set. Much like Municipal Waste, Gama Bomb are best witnessed at their own show in a small venue where the crowd are really up for it and can really get involved and the next time they do a headline tour, it’s going to be a show worth paying for.
