So here I go, back
on the road to witness the rock ‘n’ metal.
The Corp is a fave venue of this boy and to say I’d been
looking forward to this gig would be an understatement.
Got my ticket months ago and it read 001. Unfortunately, I
was late getting into the gig and I couldn’t believe it when I saw the
running times and Celesty had replaced the original band and were
already on. This is a band
I have wanted to see for awhile so grabbed a double vodka red bull and
settled into a spot. I caught 4 songs of a 45min set and there was a
good turnout for them and this crowd loved every song.
These boys have songs of epic proportions, fast, melodic metal
with soaring vocals, finishing with a song about Warriors where everyone
of the crowd were punching the air.
Man. I wish I’d caught the whole set cos these guys deserve a
better review, so I apologise and promise to see em again and review the
whole show. To add to such
a great set, the band came out straight after and had photos taken,
signed shit and took the time to chat. And so to Metsatoll,
whom I knew nothing about, not one song did I know and frankly I don’t
care cos they put a smile on my face throughout their 45 min set. This
was Heavy Metal Estonian folk, Jehtro Tull for the dark side!
They even have a guy playing a penny whistle for god’s sake!!
He’s like a heavy metal Ian Anderson, with an array of
peculiar instruments including bagpipes and something resembling
a washboard to which he
takes a bow to. The band
are tight and the crowd are behind em all the way, they’re loving it.
The guitarist resembles a less hairy Zakk Wylde and the last song
has a section where you can sing Juke Box Hero to, unintentionally of
course! I thoroughly
enjoyed Metsatoll and if they play over here again I recommend you catch
em. I first came across Kiuas when they supported Firewind on a UK Tour and they blew me away at Leeds Rios. These boys still rock like a mutha and give this crowd an hours worth of metal. Finland’s metal warriors are known for their epic sound, combining traditional and melodic metal, touching elements from the extreme metal genre. In Ilja Jalkanen they have a strong frontman who can interact with any crowd and making his presence felt when scaling the PA at the front of the stage. Mikko just shreds his Dean Razorback on every song, he has such an awesome technical ability. Teemu on bass is starting to resemble Scott Ian but with 4 strings instead of six, and keeping it tight and solid with Markku pounding the drums at the back, while Atte front stage right provides those keyboard tones that have become an integral part of the Kiuas sound. The band played a
60 minute set and the crowd were behind them from the off, punching the
air, clapping, cheering and shouting during and after every song.
The band seemed very pleased with the turnout and the greeting
given to every song, including tunes from new cd 'Lustdriven'. Standout track for me had to be 'Of Lust, Love and Human
Nature' from 'Lustdriven'. Kiuas
have songs that are not only aggressive but soar and I did feel that
they should include more orchestration on future songs as the band
seemed to rise just that bit higher when playing them. And so ends another
away gig, once again the Corp gave me a great night and although I’m
not a huge fan of the small room that didn’t bother me tonight.
If you ever get the chance to see any of the 3 bands I recommend
you go along cos they all deserve your support.
