Artist:  Zico Chain

Venue: The Well, Leeds

Date:  25 January 2010

After a lot of refurbishment and a change in management, The Well Leeds (formerly Joseph’s Well) seems to be on its way back to its glory days as one of the premier local music venues in Leeds, judging by the increase in quality of the bands they are booking these days. It’s a shame however, that the promotion for the gigs isn’t currently matching the stature of the bands they’re booking, as is evidenced by tonight’s poor turnout.
Yes it’s a Monday and yes, nobody apart from bank managers seem to have any money these days but still, Zico Chain deserve more given their ability to appeal to everyone from grungers to sleazy rockers to metallers and beyond such is the range of styles the band encompass in their music. Lucky then, for those of us ‘in the know’ that have shown up tonight that Zico Chain are a band who really couldn’t give a toss and just want to rock whatever venue they find themselves in until the walls vibrate which is exactly what the London trio proceed to do tonight.

Zico Chain are a band that refuse to pigeon-holed. Throughout the course of their 45-minute set, you can hear the influence of a wide range of bands from Nirvana (singer Chris Glithero’s Cobain-esque stage moves and vocal style are certainly no coincidence) to Guns N Roses to the Sex Pistols but with a distinctly modern twist and it is this which should definitely push Zico Chain to playing much bigger venues next time around. Old favourites from debut album Food such as ‘Junk’, ‘Pretty Pictures’, ‘Where Would You Rather Be’ and a blistering version of ‘Rohypnol’ (which sparks off the night’s biggest moshpit) are very well received and new single ‘These Birds Will Kill Us All’ along with an all-round heavier edge to tonight’s set represent the more eclectic direction that the band seem to be heading in, in 2010.

This musical melting pot that the band seem to have going on makes Zico Chain one of the most original and interesting UK bands for several years – long may the upward trend continue.
