Bands: Cradle of Filth, Ne Obliviscaris & She Must Burn

Venue: Academy 2, Manchester

Date: 22 October 2015

Opening act She Must Burn kicked off the night pretty much as soon as the doors opened.  Although playing to a packed room, this seemed to do little to spur the band on resulting in a somewhat idle performance.

Next up, progressive metallers Ne Obliviscaris delivered a musically impressive set, but they looked tired and several of the members looked to be taking very little pleasure in being on stage.  Having two singers also prompted some awkward to watch moments, as when one was singing/talking, the other was looking lost and out of place.

Thankfully, headlining act Cradle of Filth delivered a spectacular performance that was bursting with riffs and energy.  Opening with ‘Heaven Torn Asunder’ sent the Manchester faithful into a complete frenzy and this trend continued right through their set.  A nicely mixed set list covered new material such as ‘Blackest Magick in Practice’, ‘Right Wing of the Garden Triptych’ along with relics such as ‘Malice Through the Looking Glass’ and ‘Lord Abortion’.

Frontman Dani Filth was on fine form with new members Richard Shaw, Marek Šmerda and Lindsay Schoolcraft playing their parts to perfection.  Oozing with charisma, the encore of ‘Yours Immortally’, ‘Nymphetamine’ and the stellar ‘Her Ghost in the Fog’ demonstrated that Cradle of Filth are an act that remains as vital as ever.
