Band: Anastacia, Fyre! & Giulia

Venue: 02 Shepherd's Bush Empire, London

Date: 23 January 2015

Right after their support for Alice Cooper and Michael Schenker Group last year, Fyre! hit the stage at O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London, 23/01/15, supporting singer-songwriter and pop idol Anastacia. A rather unusual combo given that Fyre!, although it’s quite hard to put them into one genre, are more rock than pop. But that didn’t hinder them to get the crowd as pumped as the main act of the evening.

Right before Fyre!, Italian singer-songwriter Giulia entertained the crowd with a mix of country-rock and a modern twist of pop from her debut album “Raze Me To The Ground”. Produced by Tom Nichols who’s worked with the likes of All Saints and Kylie Minogue and with Giulia’s early influences that derived from bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Avril Lavigne and her idol Shania Twain, it’s no surprise that her great voice and catchy sound appealed to the crowd immediately.

Fyre!, consisting of rock latina Alejandra Burgos and Ex-Metalium members Lars Ratz and Tolo Grimalt were up next with a performance that burst with energy and rock ‘n’ roll spirit. Their sound, thanks to front-woman Alejandra, reminded of the likes of Lzzy Hale (Halestorm) and Mia Coldheart (Crucified Barbara). A roaring, incredible voice, catchy guitar riffs with a great rhythm section combined with a performance that included Alejandra kicking her leg up while playing guitar or bending backwards, led to a captivating show that got the crowd excited instantly. On this tour, Fyre! played songs from their debut album “Missy Powerful” that came out at the end of 2013 through AFM Records. They covered a spectrum of different genres, sometimes classic rock, sometimes with a bit of metal, sometimes a slow ballad with a bluesy or pop feel, which makes it hard to put them into one genre but maybe that was one of the many reasons why the audience loved them so much.

After Fyre!’s performance main act Anastacia hit the stage with songs from her new top 10 album “Resurrection” as well as her most known hits “I’m Outta Love” and “Paid My Dues” amongst others. One thing that made her performance special, especially to her fans, were short Q&A sessions between her songs. Having collected fan questions before her gig, she read them out and answered all of them with a great sense of humour, a cheeky comment here and there and a warm nature that easily made her fans feel close and appreciated. One highlight of the evening was when Anastacia took one of her youngest fans from the audience on stage to sing with her, a mini version of herself as she pointed out (that little girl really looked similar to her). The second highlight was a medley of famous rock songs including AC/DC’s hit “Back In Black” and Guns N’ Roses “Sweet Child O’ Mine” which were very impressive.

Even though it wasn’t one of the usual rock gigs that we cover here at The Mayfair Mall Zine, it introduced us to a great newcomer rock band, Fyre!, of which you’ll surely hear more in the future and it also surprised me with a great cover version of two of my favourite rock songs sung by Anastacia. All in all, a great gig for a Friday evening in London.

Fyre!’s tour has ended already while Anastacia’s Resurrection World Tour is still on in Europe.
