Fresh faced
and ready to rumble, meet Anti Clockwise - Europe's brightest new hope
from the pop-punk stable. This band get up close and personal to tell it
like it is.
MM - Hi there, Would you like to introduce the band members
to us all and tell us what your roles are in the band?
P-C (Vocals & Guitar), J-B (Bass Guitar & Vocals, Hugo
(Drums).
MM - Now for a
bit of background on all you chaps - how did you all meet and where do
you call home?
Me
(P-C) and J-B met 10 years ago. We played in another Portuguese punk
band. After two years he left that band and we lost contact for a while.
I found him again in 96 and we decided to form another band. We had
another drummer but replaced him for Hugo (J-B’s friend).
MM - Having listened intently to a couple of
your CD's I can honestly say that your music comes across as very
energetic and quite punkish in attitude. How would you describe your
music and who do you think it would most appeal to?
P-C - Punk rock is my life since I heard “It’s alive” from
The Ramones many “moons” ago. J-B and Hugo are different from me.
They like and listen to a lot of music styles so we just put all our
references in one single bag. But being me the “force” (dictator) in
the band I always have the last word on the final sound hehehe.
We are a very energetic rock’n’roll band. Everyone who likes that
kind of stuff will like us especially live.
MM - Is it hard coming from Portugal and trying
to break into the music industry?
P-C - I think it’s hard for every pure rock’n’roll band to
break into the music industry no matter where they come from. It’s not
just the music that counts nowadays. It’s the same shit as life in
general. If you have someone to sell your image no matter if you’re
good or a pile of shit, you break into the music industry. If not
you’re fucked. If you’re strong and you love and believe in what
you’re doing you keep going, if not you give up.
MM - In a nutshell, what makes you
different from all the other bands that are coming out at present? Will
Anti Clockwise change the face of Rock n' Roll as we know it?
P-C - We don't really care about that. We just want to do what we
like and do it good.
MM - What can your fans expect from an Anti
Clockwise live show?
P-C - A lot of energy from the band, rocking songs and a good
night out. Rock is having a good time so don't expect us to moan about
our sorry life's.
MM - The band are due to appear on a
compilation album from the UK based Changes One Records later this year.
How did you come to hook up with the Changes One label and are there any
signs of the band being signed for an album or EP with them?
P-C - I’m in the Changes One and Wildhearts group lists so when
Ian asked for bands to appear in the comp CD I told him he could use one
of Anti-Clockwise tracks and that was it. We are recording six new songs
now and I’ll send it to Ian but I think it’s difficult for him to
sign a non-English band. Well we did a gig in London this year and we
never dreamt about it so we never know how the future will be.
MM - July this year saw the band play support
to The Dead Kennedy's. How did that come about and did your enjoy it?
P-C- That was something that we didn't find it possible to happen
'cause as you might know the music mafia (that will be big music
managers in the business) take control of everything so they always put
the same bands supporting. We just went to the promoters of the gigs and
gave them a videotape with some live action with Anti-Clockwise saying
that we would like to open for the DK. A few days later I got a call
from them saying they loved the video and they wanted us to open the
gigs. We just loved it.
MM - What sort of feedback did you get from The
Dead Kennedy's fans, did they enjoy your bands performance?
P-C -It was the first time that we played in front of a 1000
audience, 1000 DK hardcore fans and it was very good. The response was
awesome and we got a lot of new fans. The DK liked us as well. Even
Brandon Cruz's mother loved it. You can see the message she left on our
guest book.
MM - How can people keep in touch with what the
band are up to? Would you like to tell the readers what your website
address is?
P-C -
Just go to:
www.anti-clockwise.net
MM - What bands are you currently listening to
and are there any underground bands you think we should watch out for?
P-C - At the moment I'm listening to all the Supersuckers albums
'cause I've just bought 'em all. I had them on mp but now I have the
original albums so when I'm driving I listen to it. I'm also listening
to The Wildhearts CD's 'cause they have new songs coming out and I'm
getting excited. Plan A, B-Movie Heroes ... and THE PARKINSON'S.
MM -
Which Anti Clockwise song is your personal favourite and why?
P-C - The
most recent songs are always the ones that I prefer so the new ones are
the ones. I can't wait to get 'em recorded and start playing them live.
MM - Where did you get such a cryptic band
name? What is the meaning behind it?
P-C - The
old drummer comes out with the name and I hate it actually. It means
going against the tide. But now I'm used to the fucker.
MM - What's the best and worst thing about
being in Anti Clockwise?
P-C -The best thing is being able to do the music I love and play
it in front of a crazy audience. The worst is ... well there's nothing
worst about being in Anti-Clockwise.
MM - Tell us one thing
about yourself that not many people know.
P-C - If I tell you, a lot of people will know it, so no way
baby.
MM - If and when you hit
the big time, how will you ensure that success doesn't go to your head?
P-C - We play pure rock n' roll so we'll never hit the big time
and success sucks but sucksex is good ;)
MM - Where do you hope to see Anti Clockwise in
5 years time?
P-C- I hope the band members are still alive by that time.
MM - In your opinion, what was the most Rock n'
Roll record that was ever made?
P-C - Fucked up question ... maybe 'Never mind the bollocks'.
MM - What has been your proudest moment to
date, either with the band or personally?
P-C- I'm such a 'full of pride bastard' that I never notice it.
MM - Lastly, is there anything you would like
to say to all your fans out there?
P-C - Hope to play again in England soon. We love your beer and
your weather.
