The
name Dave Evans may not instantly be recognisable, however he was one of
the original founding members of none other than the mighty AC/DC, and
as his album 'Judgement Day proves, he's got some bad-ass tunes to back
that legacy up. We catch up with the man himself to find out more
...
MM
- Your album 'Judgement Day' is being release by Rocksector Records, how
did you get involved with the label? DE - I researched
different labels online and Rocksector seemed to suit my music and they
were also very proactive in promoting their artists, so I contacted them
and was very happy to sign with them.
MM
- Is this just for the re-release of the album or will there be a new
Dave Evans album out shortly? If yes what can we expect from it?
DE - This is
actually a debut release in the UK for 'Judgement Day'. I have
several songs being considered for a future album but my music will
still remain classic hard rock.

MM
- Obviously the subject of AC/DC must come up, how did you get involved
with the Young brothers in the first place?
DE - I had several bands from the
age of 17, namely, In Session, Django, and Velvet
Underground. After Velvet Underground split up, I answered
and advertisement for a heavy rock singer in the Sydney Morning
Herald. Malcolm Young answered the
phone. He knew of me, as he had been the guitarist with Velvet
Underground before I joined them and the members of the band had also
spoken to me about Malcolm, their former guitarist. Malcolm
asked me to come over to a rehearsal place in Newtown, an inner
suburb of Sydney, to jam with him and drummer Colin Burgess and bass
player Larry Van Kriedt as they
were looking for a singer to complete the band. So I jammed
with them and after that we shook hands and formed a band, although
we did not have a name. A week later Malcolm asked us if his
younger brother Angus could audition for us as his band, Kentuckee,
had split up. We agreed and Angus auditioned for us and was accepted
into the band, and now we were five members.

MM
- Even before Bon Scott took over as vocalist the band already started
building a reputation for being a great rock n' roll band, did you
foresee the band developing into the phenomena that they are now?
DE - No, I don’t think even the remaining two original members
could have conceived of the incredible worldwide phenomena that is
AC/DC.
MM
- As a young band you must have had your fair share of disagreements was
this a contributing factor to you leaving the band? DE - I didn’t really have any disagreements as far as the music
was concerned. I was very young and was just so rapt to be
recording and rubbing shoulders with Australia’s elite musicians,
producers and promoters. As with any family, there are usually
family members who have personality conflicts, and I also did have a
physical confrontation with our manager whilst on tour promoting our hit
single “Can I Sit Next To Girl” and things were quite chilly,
especially after that.
MM
- If you could have kissed and made up soon after leaving do you think
you’d have rejoined the band if asked? DE -
If things could have been patched up between us more or less
straight after the split, that would have been cool, as we did have a
hit record on our hands. Not long after that, I signed a record
deal with CBS Records with my new band Rabbit.
MM
- Your new tour here in the UK starts off in Newcastle Upon
Tyne, was this an intentional starting point for the tour as you have
links with Newcastle in Australia or is it just coincidence, also it's
Brian Johnson’s home town. DE – No, I never really
thought about that, as the tour dates were completely up to the booking
agency. I hope that Brian’s fans come to the show and make me
welcome in his hometown, as Bon Scott’s fans made me welcome in
Fremantle in Western Australia where he grew up when I performed there.
MM
- What can we expect from the shows and what will the set list consist
of? DE – Good hard Aussie rock!! I will be performing
songs from my album 'Judgement Day' plus a couple of songs that I
personally performed with AC/DC as many of the fans love to hear them
and maybe a couple of the
Bon Scott classics, in his honour, if the audience wishes to hear them
as well.
MM
- There will be a special UK The Badasses line up for this tour, can you
tell us who's in the line up? DE - Yep, it’ll be great to
perform with my UK Badasses. The members are Chris
Appleton (guitar) & Martin McNee (drums) from Fury UK, &
Marshall Gill (guitar) from New Model Army and Leon Gill (bass) from New
Union.
MM
- Will you get any rehearsal time with these guys before the tour
starts? DE - Yes, and looking forward to meeting the guys and
getting everything right for the tour.
MM
- What does rock mean to you, are you rock through and through?
DE - Rock is a way of life
and a very real attitude, as those of us who really rock know!!
MM
- Obviously when a band you started goes on to be one of the biggest if
not the biggest rock band in the world do you sit back and think “if
only” from time to time? DE - No. The great success after
me with Bon Scott was very much because of the great classic songs that
he wrote with the band and I can’t take any credit for any of that or
for the great and long career that Brian has had with the band for the
last 30 years. That is an incredible effort. My part in the
band was only small, but obviously, still significant.
MM
- Apart for this tour and the re-release of the 'Judgement Day' album
what does the rest of 2010 have in store for Dave Evans? DE -
As I stated before, this is a debut release of 'Judgement Day' in
the UK. I am looking to continue touring in 2010 on the continent
before returning to Australia.
MM
- Finally is there anything you’d like to say to our readers or any
words of wisdom you’d like to share? DE - LOL!!
Just enjoy every day as it comes and play the music LOUD!! Long
Live Rock!!
We'd
like to thank Dave for taking the time out to chat with us today and
wish him every success with the album 'Judgement Day' and his
forthcoming UK tour. If you're into bad-ass Aussie style rock n'
roll then be sure to check him out. |
