Hi guys,
thanks for agreeing to take part in this
interview with us we really appreciate it.
GV - Thanks
for giving us the chance to talk to you, we
really appreciate it.
MM - Would you
like to give us a brief history on the band,
how it all came about, how it’s evolved and
where you call home etc?
 |
Martin - The band
started in 2005 when me and Jonny Cole met
Ash Walker and Adam Laing in college. We had
our first rehearsal and decided to jam "Fire
and Water" by Free, and it really seemed to
work.
Since February we gigged and rehearsed as
much as we could, unfortunately
Ash Walker left in July 2006 due to musical
differences. There was no question of
breaking up, we needed a new guitarist. |
Ric Gingell was the obvious choice to make
because of his playing ability.
I would say that home to us means the
rehearsal room. We have been
rehearsing even more hours lately, tying up
loose ends and writing new
songs ... we love it.
MM - How do
you feel the bands sound has developed since
it originally started?
Martin - I think that
when we first began, we were very naive in
what we wanted to
achieve. We literally plugged in and played.
I feel that the band has matured immensely
in that we are very conscious of our
individual sound and live sound. I also
believe that the arrival of Ric was like a
breath of fresh air to the band and he has
opened up a lot of different genres of music
to us.
MM - How would
you describe your music and who do you see
as your target audience?
Martin - Basic rock.
A four-piece who like the idea of no drum
loops, keyboards or effects. We also take
influence from All time greats like Free,
Bad Company,
Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Thin Lizzy.
However we also love artists such
as Joe Bonamassa and The Kenny Wayne
Shepherd Band. We are trying to play simple
rock music which can be understood by
anyone.
MM - At what
age did you become interested in being a
performer and what/who inspired you to join
a band?
Martin
(Drums): I started playing drums when I was 5. I had to buy a custom built
smaller drum kit as I was too small. It was
at the age of 14 when I became heavily
influenced by the band Feeder. It was then
that I decided I wanted to be a drummer in a
rock band.
Adam (Bass): I haven't been playing
for a long time, I began playing bass
because I didn't want to play guitar (if
that makes sense). I originally wanted to
play drums but it was very impractical to
have a drum kit in my house, so I went for
the middle ground. |
 |
Ric (Lead Guitar): Well I've been
playing guitar for about five years now but
have grew up with music from day one due to
my dad being a professional
guitarist. It was when I was eleven I
decided I wanted to play in bands and
see were it would get me, the one band I
could say influenced me the most
was a band my dad introduced me to when I
was younger and that band is Thin Lizzy I
admire them not just for there writing
abilities but for there
showmanship and live performance.
Jonny (Vocals): I have always wanted
to be a Front man. In 2003 Martin and I
decided to start gigging small local venues
with a little acoustic set. It was Me and
Martin who decided to branch out into a
four-piece and play the Rock music we've
always admired.
MM - Where did
the bands name come from and what does it
represent to you? Can you remember any of
the other names that were considered at the
time?
Martin -
To be
truthful no-one can remember where the name
Get Vegas came from, but it seemed to stick
and people liked it. I can remember Mandate
and Boystory2 being strong contenders for
the band name at the time (I'm joking of
course). Thank God we choose Get Vegas!
MM - The band currently
have an EP
out at the moment called ‘Soundtrack to a
Revolution’. Would you like to tell us a little bit
about the songs that feature on it?
Martin
- "Soundtrack
to a Revolution" was our first EP. It seems
so long ago we wrote those songs and only
"Hard Lovin'" remains in our current set. The songs that feature on the record were
our first ever four songs. We wrote them in
the space of five months and recorded them
as soon as they felt tight. We wanted a
quick EP so that we could get gigs.
|
MM - How does
the song writing process work within the
band? Is it down to one particular person
or do you all get involved?
Martin
- The song
writing process in Get Vegas usually comes
from one person playing a riff or melody and
the rest of the band improvising around it. We find in doing this we achieve a more
natural sound. The only one rule is … Jonny
Cole writes all lyrics.
MM - What song
is your personal favourite to play live and
which one(s) really get the crowd going
wild?
Martin
- "Burning
Soul" is our personal favourite song to play
live as the song has a range of dynamics.
"The River" seems to be the song that gets
everyone dancing. It’s a fast paced
Country/Southern Rock 12 bar Blues song!
|
 |
MM - For
you personally what bands do you think were
the most influential from: (a) the 70’s, (b)
the 80’s, (c) the 90’s, and (d) today.
From the
70's :-
Thin Lizzy,
Bad Company,
Led Zeppelin and
Deep Purple.
From the 80's :-
Bruce Springsteen,
Queen,
Guns N Roses and
The Knack.
From the 90's :-
Feeder,
Oasis,
Nirvana and
Foo Fighters.
Today :-
Feeder,
Foo Fighters,
The Datsuns and
Deep Purple.
MM - How
has the internet helped spread the word
about the band and do you feel downloading
is harming the scene of helping to keep it
alive?
Martin
- With modern
sites such as MySpace and Pure Volume, the
internet is a powerful tool for an unsigned
band such as ourselves. However we do feel
that downloading is affecting record sales
and it still is illegal on a lot of sites. However with big music download companies
such as Kazaa starting to charge for
downloads, we hope it won't be long before
we see sales of CD singles and albums rise
again.
 |
MM - If
you were doing a gig on a desert island
and could only bring one instrument with
you for the whole band, what would it be
and why?
Martin - A
Grand Piano! We could work out all
melody lines and song parts ... it would
be fantastic!
MM -
Now for your sales pitch, why should our
readers buy ‘Soundtrack to a Revolution’
instead of something else? What sets
your music apart from the hundreds of
other EP’s released right now so to
speak?
Martin - They
shouldn't! They should wait a few months
for our next E.P which will show how the
band has matured and how diverse we are.
|
MM - Are
there any other upcoming bands that you'd
suggest people keep an ear out for?
Martin -
Rattlesnake
Remedy. We will feature as main support for
them at the Arc on the 7th September 2006. These guys are awesome, make sure you check
them out!
MM - Finally
is there anything you’d like to say to all
our readers out there?
Martin -
Thanks for checking us
out. For recent gig/tour dates keep checking
www.getvegasmusic.com
or
www.myspace.com/getvegas.
*Our thanks go out to the band for
taking the time out from their busy schedule
to take part in this interview with us.
If you like old school classic rock then
we'd highly recommend you check out these
young guys.
