MM - Introduce
the band members to us and where do you call home?![]() Present Steve Tyler (Bass and Vocals), Dan Kentley (Lead Guitar), and Rich Smith (rhythm guitar). We are the guitar section of Lux Perpetua. Unfortunately Matt Havana (Lead Vocals) is on holiday, and Cardy (Drums) could not organise the time off work. We (Lux Perpetua) are a York based band, who are about to break out of the York scene and take the U.K. by storm. MM - When was the band formed and how did you all meet? Lux Perpetua in one form or another have been around for 5 years. In our time, Lux has included some of York's finest musicians, including La Fours bass player Talia Lyon, and the living legend Chris Ives (Now at university). But without going back too far into the past, this incarnation of Lux has been around for about a year. I (Steve) came off drums as I found them too restricting, and introduced Dan to the band due to the leaving of Chris Ives. This was pretty much the start of the new Look Lux so to speak. Cardy soon followed as a replacement drummer, and after trying a variety of rhythm guitarists, Rich seemed to fit the best, and the rest as they say is history! MM - Describe your music and who do you think it would most appeal to? We have been described in many different ways over the years. Including Fibbers describing us as Spacious, gloomy, Joy Division style rock. However, we feel that the guy who recorded our demo summed us up best, as The Offspring with Marilyn Manson on Vocals! We have a variety of sounds, ranging from very nu-metal, to old school thrash. Like The Bloodhound Gang would say, we're "Not old or new, more middle school,". We don't really fit into one category. Our fans like our music vary greatly, from the original from metal heads, to culture sluts, and all points in between. We and our present fans feel that any "alternative" person, will find something in our music that they like, Hell give us a shot, we doubt that we will disappoint!!!! MM - Where does the bands name Lux Perpetua come from? The name "LUX PERPETUA" is Latin for "The Eternal Light". (AND THE STORY GOES…)One night, Matt was sitting in his room with a group of friends, as you do, burning candles and incense, and generally being a spotty teen-ager. When he thought, "I need a name for my brilliant new band". He sat and thought for a while, suggesting all sorts of "interesting" names, none of which I care to repeat, when he noticed that the black candle in front of him, kept flaring brighter than any other. He thought wow that's odd. He then looked at the writing on the candle, which read "Lux Perpetua". And even now 5 years on, the eternal light is shining brighter than ever! Isn't that nice huh? MM - What instruments/equipment do the band use? In order to get our synthy sound, we are very picky about our equipment, and use a range of foot-pedals and switches, to effect our guitars, and Matt's voice. I (Steve), use a Westone Spectrum Bass, with a Zoom 708 and Boss distortion pedal, and a wonderful homemade fake-fur amp, which I am very proud of and love dearly! Dan, depending on the set that we are playing, either uses his Jackson DX7 7 string guitar, or his Gibson SG. Along with an Audio Technica scanner, an Ibanez distortion pedal, and a Zoom 707 for the pretty distorted, reverby, synth sound that fans of ours admire so much in his playing! Rich plays with a Standard Fender Strat, and 505 to create his solid rhythm, and occasional lead sound. Cardy, plays with either my (Steve) Purple, sunburst Remo Master-Edge, or my Pearl Master drum kit. Matt uses all sorts of voice changey type things, but you will have to ask him about those, because I don't need those new fangled contraptions to sing Britney! MM - The band will shortly be performing at the Battle of the Bands in Fibbers, York. How do you feel to be through to the second round? We are looking forward to round 2, and are confident of going further in the competition. I can't remember us sounding this good, so I honestly believe that we will give them all a run for their money! We are playing, on the 30th of May, so if you happen to be in York at the time, please come and give us a look. If you want to know how we do, please visit our web-site, at: www.luxperpetua.moonfruit.com MM - The band are rumoured to have a liking for women's clothing, wellies and Britney Spears! Please elaborate! Guilty as charged! Matt does like his wedding dress, Cardy is also prone to the occasional gig in a P.V.C. number, and I myself have been known to impersonate Britney Spears (MMMMMMMM BRITNEY) on occasions. But that is just us, and what we do. As for the wellies, it was Rich's first gig, and was dared to play naked, but in the end, we all settled for wellies, and a strip tease during The Beautiful People. (Nice to know that you do research!) Did I mention that we all Love Britney? JUST LOOK AT HER, AND OH THAT VOICE! (Back in 5, I need a cold shower) MM - What bands/artists have inspired you the most over the years? Well, as a band, we take inspiration from a lot of artists. There is often an edge of Marilyn Manson to our sound, but as individuals, our tastes vary! Matt is a big Mazza fan, I have the oddest taste in music ever, I have to thank Aerosmith and Pink Floyd, and possibly Korn for my latest style. Dan is a big Slash Rose fan (but also draws inspiration from Steve Vai, and gets his stage attitude from Wes Borland. As for Rich, he is a Clapton fan, and Cardy adores Joey Jordison. MM - Who is your ultimate Rock Icon? Erm … (Lots of conferring…papers rustle ... mobile phones ring) BRITNEY!!!! What, she's not rock? I suppose for me Ozzy Osbourne, or Jimmy Hendrix. But Slash and Marc Bolan have to right up there too! MM - What was the first rock concert you ever attended? Hard to say really. The good ones kind of blur in your mind! But maybe Donnington Monsters of rock, the Year that Slash's Snake Pit played. Or was it the Metallica year? Oh that was close enough! MM - What do you feel has been the bands biggest accomplishment so far? That is quite a tough one! But I suppose that that would be a couple of years ago, when Talia and Chris were still with us. We got absolutely slated in the Press, and my ex-girlfriends dad pulled some strings, and we ended up in London, recording with ex The Who keyboard player Ron Magnus. Supporting All The Pretty Horses is very exciting too though. MM - Who writes the songs that you perform? Is it a solo effort or more of a band thing? Well Steve and Dan generally come up with a riff to work from, but then the rest of the band come in. Matt insists on writing his own lyrics, which I suppose is fair enough. The only time that anybody else gets away with lyric writing is when I (Steve) do my song. However as Matt is on holiday at the moment, we are trying some new material, which we have all chipped in on the lyric writing. MM - The band have been chosen as the support act for the Dark Glam band All The Pretty Horses when they play Fibbers in York. How do you feel to be a part of this prestigious show? We can't wait for All The Pretty Horses! We have heard so much about them, but haven't had a chance to hear that much of their music. BRING IT ON! They seem right up our street. (You never know, you may be seeing us at a venue near you with All The Pretty Horses soon!) MM - Do you have any other gigs planned around the UK for your fans to pencil into their diaries? We are having to take some time off with our vocalist being away, but we are trying to organise something of a tour in July, so check out the "UP COMING EVENTS" section of our web-site. www.luxperpetua.moonfruit.com MM - How would you like to see rock music progress in the next couple of years? Oo-er missus! We would like to see the Gunners reform with Slash. I/we think that synthy nu-metal is the way forward, however, it would be nice to see more Papa Roach style groups emerge. Oh yes and of course, Britney WILL become a legend! MM - Name an album you've heard recently and liked. Papa Roach Infest! I haven't heard anything better for some time. MM - Is all your music original material or do you do cover versions as well? We do sometimes play covers. It all depends on what the crowd wants to hear. We try to give our fans what they want, and if they want to hear covers, covers they shall get! We try not to play too many covers though. There are too many bands around that are happy just to recycle, without making a statement of their own! MM - Have any of the any of the band members featured in any other bands before Lux Perpetua? Well, both Dan and myself (Steve) were in a band named Powercut, and that is where we met. I was also in Paraphinalia for a while, and we all have done side-projects, but Lux Perpetua is the only band of any real credibility. MM - How would you describe the bands mood right now? Well, to be honest, we are all on a bit of a high at the moment. Like we have said, we are doing well in Battle of the Bands, we have never sounded better than we do at the moment, and to top it all off, we are playing with ATPH. However, Rich is right in the middle of his A-Level final exams, so he is a little stressed. MM - When you die what would you like them to carve on your gravestone? That is quite morbid, and we don't like to think about it too much, as we live for now. After all, we are The Eternal Light! When I die, I think that I want to be cremated. But it would be nice to have a small statue put up somewhere. In case any of you are wondering, I want the Virgin Mary statue off our web-site. www.luxperpetua.moonfruit.com . After all, it is called "Lux Perpetua"! Does that count? MM - What song would you choose as the soundtrack to your life? Well, since Dan and Rich just left, I guess that I will have to answer that one all by myself. I know that it is a bit wet, but probably Dream On by Aerosmith, or I suppose Let It Be has a deep meaning to me too. As for Matt's anthem, probably Like A Virgin by Madonna. That sums him up a treat. Or maybe Lola by the Kinks would be better? MM - Lastly, is there anything you would like to say to all your fans out there? To our fans, we say thank you for all of your support. And of course, Keep The Eternal Light Shining! To anyone, who likes the sound of us, look out for us playing near you soon!!!!!! Oh, I must say hello to my gran Rita Woods! Even now in her 70's, she comes to all of our gigs. And Tepedy, cheers for the hats! |
