MM -
Introduce the band to us and where do you call home?
Matt Briard - Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Rocky Mercurio - Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
George Pereira - Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Dave Worden - Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
Billy Dunkley - Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
MM
- When was the band first formed and how did you all meet?
George : The band was formed 8 years ago. The
remaining original members are Rocky, Billy and myself.
Rocky : In July of 1997 we parted ways with our original bass player.
Dave was a friend we had known from the local scene here in Vancouver.
Dave : George had called me up to come out and audition. I was really
reluctant to do so as the last few projects had soured me a bit. But
George was persistent, and here I am.
Rocky : Now Matt's entrance was funny. We had first met Matt in early
1998 at Dave's first show with us. We opened for the band Matt was in at
that time. Upon watching and hearing Matt's performance, I wanted him as
our singer at that time.
Dave : Low and behold one year later we parted ways with our original
singer and the first person we thought of was Matt. But none of us knew
how to contact him. We asked around to everyone we knew but nothing.
George : So we place an ad in the local music mag for a singer. I met 2
before I met with Matt. I'm listening to his previous bands songs, so I
ask him, what was the bands name, he tells me and I practically leap at
him screaming "We've been looking for you!" I wish I had a
picture of the look on his face.
MM
- Where did the name Vicious Circle come from?
Billy : The name "Vicious Circle" was born out of frustration.
We couldn't think of a name and we had been trying for weeks, so at
rehearsal one day there we were again and I said "It's just a damn
vicious circle boys" and everyone stopped and said that's it.
MM
- How would you best describe your music and who would it most appeal
to?
Matt : Good old fashioned Rock and freaking roll darlin.
Rocky : Our music can appeal to lots of people who are open to listening
to "Rock n Roll" again.
MM
- What bands/artists have influenced the band over the years?
Matt : Guns N' Roses, Queen
Rocky : Kiss, Cheap Trick, Tesla, Alice n' Chains
George : Kiss, Van Halen, Queen, Metalica
Dave : Journey, Godsmack
Billy : Stryper, Journey, Alice n' Chains, Queensryche
MM
-The band has had quite a busy schedule of touring in the past. Do you
have any plans to tour outside Canada and the USA in the near future?
George : We are hoping to, but the biggest hurdle to touring Europe and
Asia is strictly financial. So as soon as it becomes viable for us to do
so, we are there!
MM
- How has the Rock media responded to the band in general?
Rocky : The mainstream media in North America has been luke warm, but
the alternative media has been all over us.
George : The internet has also been an amazing tool for us, which we've
embraced.
MM
- Do the band write the songs together or is it more down to one
particular person?
Matt : What's amazing about this band is the we write together. As a
collective. All songs written by "VICIOUS CIRCLE"!
Dave : The reason it works is that everyone wants what's right for the
song and not their own ego.
MM
- What are the bands plans/hopes for the future?
George : Well we just finished up demoing 4 new songs, which are now on
our site, so we will be taking Christmas off.
Dave : We'll start the "Machine" back up in January. We've got
a few major coals in the fire right now, so if all works out 2001 could
turn out to be a "Wind Up" of a year for us.
MM
- Are the songs that your perform all your own original material or do
you do cover versions as well?
Billy : We do a couple of cover's and that's it. We've done "What
do you do" by "Saigon Kick".
Dave : "Steppin' Stone" by the "Monkees" which is on
"Fine Line".
Rocky : We used to do a hilarious version of "Niel Young's"
"Rockin' in the Free World". We'd pretend that it was "Motorhead"
performing it.
Matt : And recently we've been doing "Man in the Box" by
"Alice n' Chains".
MM
- Tell us about your debut album 'Fine Line' and how can it be obtained?
Rocky : "Fine Line" was a great learning experience for us.
It's a great record and we stand by it, but man have we grown since
then.
Dave : That's why we are dying to start the next record, because it'll
be a new line up with stronger songs!
George : "Fine Line" can be obtained online at our website or
pretty much at online stores as well.
MM
- If you could invite any 5 people alive or dead to share a few beers
with you, who would you choose and why?
Matt : Freddy Mercury
Rocky : John Bonham
George : Gene Simmons
Dave : Steve Perry
Billy : Geoff Tate
MM
- Sex Drugs and Rock N' Roll - a lifestyle or a fantasy?
George : I know I speak for all of us when I say it's mostly pure
fantasy.
Billy : In today's "Rock n' Roll" business world there isn't
time for that kind of legendary debauchery. But we do do our fair share
in our own ways!
Matt : Our career's are more important than shooting heroin. We want a
career not to become a speed bump in "Rock history".
MM - Just how far you would you sell your soul in the name of Rock N'
Roll?
George : I thought we had already.
Rocky : We compromise within the context of this band only. What's right
for the band is right for us!
Dave : And that's it!
MM - Lastly, what short phrase would best describe the band?
Matt : Don't hate us because we're beautiful.
Rocky : It's Rock n roll, we're not building piano's here!
George : I don't look like Gene Simmons, but Matt does look like
"Kid Rock".
Dave : I know nothing of the tapes, nothing!
Billy : Is it true that we still owe "Ozzy" money?
